Smile, it's painless!

I just read revcathian 's blog about the dangers in cyberspace and I want to share a web site I learned about years ago called Cyber Angels.

CyberAngels started in 1995 when Curtis Sliwa, founder and president of Guardian Angels was a radio talk show host in New York. A woman called in and asked what he intended to do about cyberspace.  Curtis took up the challenge and Cyber Angels is the result.

Who they are

The volunteers of CyberAngels are comprised mainly of law enforcement officers, information technology specialists, and educators from all over the world. They also include parents, librarians, technical writers and legal professionals. All of the volunteers happily give up free time to ensure that our Internet experiences are safe and that when we need assistance, someone is there to provide it.

Their mission

Prevention
Through education they hope to prevent Internet users from becoming the victims of online criminal activity.

Assistance
Teams of specially trained volunteers work hard to help victims trace and identify the perpetrators of online crime so they can be prosecuted.

Monitoring
They keep a close eye on Internet legal topics that affect us. They hope to help keep the public informed on various topics up for discussion with law-makers and government agencies. They want us to know what the issues are, how various countries are addressing those issues, and how it affects us.

They have programs for local schools, families and victim assistance where you can learn the best ways to keep your children and yourself safe while you surf. Check out their web site, you won't be sorry you did.
